St. Phillips Island

Coast

  • Significant Features: St. Phillips is a dynamic barrier island where tides, storms, and shifting sands continually reshape the landscape. Visitors can explore tidal marshes, sandy beaches, and maritime forests, along with historic sites like shell middens and a World War II airplane crash site.

  • Wildlife: Loggerhead and green sea turtles nest on the beaches. Marshes and creeks shelter crabs, shrimp, and small fish. On land, white-tailed deer, raccoons, and small mammals are common, along with snakes including eastern diamondback rattlesnakes.

Birdwatchers can see hundreds of species, including plovers, sandpipers, herons, egrets, and migratory songbirds. Beaches and marshes serve as essential feeding and resting areas for these birds. Visitors are asked to respect posted areas, leash dogs, and maintain distance from wildlife.
