St. Phillips Island is managed through Hunting Island State Park. Hunting Island's office hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. M-F, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sa-Su.

Coast

  • Programs and Guided Tours: Coastal Expeditions offers regularly scheduled interpretive tours of the island. These guided experiences focus on the island’s natural and cultural history. Availability varies; visitors should check Coastal Expeditions’ website for current offerings.

    When renting the Turner House, visitors have access to a wide range of ranger-led interpretive programs, which may include kayaking, birding, interpretive hikes, coastal ecology programs, and other educational experiences.
  • Native American History: The island contains ancient shell middens, which were used historically by Native Americans to deposit oyster shells and other refuse, providing important evidence of long-term human use of the coastal environment.

  • Historical Significance: The island remains a largely undisturbed landscape and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1986. A conservation easement was put on the island in 1983.

  • Designation: National Natural Landmark
  • When & How PRT Acquired: The island was purchased by the state of South Carolina from Ted Turner in 2017.
