SCOUTS CHOICE
Whether you’re earning the Scout Carolina Patch, working toward an Eagle Scout or Silver Award, or just want to give back, Barnwell offers meaningful, hands-on projects that leave a lasting impact. Our staff is happy to support you—just be sure to contact us at least 3 weeks in advance to coordinate and plan your project.
PROJECT #1 IT’S HAMMER TIME!
Type: Group Project | Scout Carolina Patch Qualifier
Help make Barnwell State Park safer for all visitors! Over time, nails will push back up out of wooden structures, and their heads can tear clothing, trip people, and even give an unpleasant scratch. Gather your safety gear, hammers, teammates, and adults as you search out and smash down protruding nails among Barnwell’s picnic tables, shelters, benches, outdoor furniture, porches, boardwalks, fishing pier, and fences.
PROJECT #2 THE DOORS
Type: Group Project | Scout Carolina Patch Qualifier
The small shelter comfort station at Barnwell needs an upgrade! Help construct and install doors for the stalls. They should be sturdy enough so no one will accidentally break through to the other side! Work with park staff to design and plan your build.
PROJECT #3 WE WANT MORE PHISH!
Type: Group Project | Scout Carolina Patch Qualifier
Help improve wildlife habitat by building and installing fish habitats, bat houses, or wood duck boxes for Barnwell's critters! This project can support merit badges for Bird Study and Mammal Study. Coordinate with park staff on species needs and placement.
PROJECT #4 SOMETHING ‘BOUT A BOAT
Type: Eagle Scout or Silver Award Project
Design and build a durable, weather-resistant boat rack for Barnwell State Park’s fleet of fishing boats and kayaks. This is one to be proud of; this highly visible project will benefit thousands of future visitors! Park staff will help you plan and approve your design.
**For more information about these projects, contact the Park Staff at (803) 284-2212 or email Barnwell@scprt.com. Waivers & Volunteer agreements will be required for all projects. To qualify for the Scout Carolina Patch, Volunteers must camp overnight, complete a service project, and interview a park ranger.
