South Carolina State Parks Pave the Way for Improved Visitor Experiences

South Carolina State Parks is committed to providing exceptional experiences for all visitors. A key element to achieving this goal is ensuring smooth and safe access throughout our parks. We're excited to announce a series of paving projects that are significantly improving roadways and parking areas at several locations.

Projects Completed and Underway:

  • Poinsett State Park: Visitors to Poinsett State Park have been enjoying newly paved roads since October 2023. This project enhances the overall park experience by providing a smoother, more enjoyable ride.
  • Chester State Park: A collaborative effort with Chester County recently brought improved access to Chester State Park. Completed this spring, the project paved the road from the park entrance to the office, with Chester County generously covering half the cost.
  • Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site: History buffs can now navigate Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site with greater ease. A July 2024 project paved the area from the front gate to the parking area and exit road, significantly improving accessibility for all visitors.

Looking Ahead:

  • Baker Creek State Park: Thanks to a Federal Road Grant, Baker Creek State Park is poised for a major upgrade. This winter, the park anticipates paving the entrance road, campground loop road, and campsites.
  • Aiken State Park: Planning is underway at Aiken State Park. A construction meeting in June addressed the removal of 30 trees and replacement of 7 culverts to prepare for paving, likely to begin this September.
  • Barnwell State Park: Motorists headed to Barnwell State Park can expect a smoother ride this fall. Paving is scheduled for the campground road, office road, and community building roads.
  • Santee State Park: Santee State Park is also on the paving project radar, slated for possible completion this winter.

These improvements will not only enhance the visitor experience but will also provide long-term benefits by reducing maintenance needs and improving safety. We look forward to welcoming you to South Carolina State Parks and providing you with a smooth and enjoyable journey as you explore the natural beauty and rich history of our state.
