Regional Chief James Revis

Park Service Profiles

For James Revis, parks are more than just open spaces—they are the heart of communities, places that inspire, heal, and connect people. As the Regional Chief of the Upper Coastal Region for South Carolina State Parks, James has dedicated his career to preserving these special places while fostering the growth of the rangers who care for them.

James' journey with SC State Parks began in 2012 as an intern at Dreher Island State Park. From there, he worked his way up, serving as an Assistant Ranger at Devils Fork and Keowee-Toxaway state parks before stepping into the full-time ranger role at Kings Mountain State Park. His career continued to advance through positions at Hamilton Branch, Huntington Beach, and Little Pee Dee state parks, each move shaping his leadership and deepening his love for the profession.

Outside of his time in the parks, James honed his skills in leadership and management. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management with a minor in history from Clemson University, followed by an MBA from the University of South Carolina Aiken. He is also a graduate of multiple leadership programs, including Clemson’s Ron Walker Leadership Program, the Associate Public Manager (APM) Program, and the America’s State Parks Leadership School. "These experiences have equipped me with a diverse skill set and a deep understanding of both leadership and park management, enabling me to effectively serve as Regional Chief," says James.

Becoming a Regional Chief was not just a career move for James—it was a calling.

"My love for parks led me to become a ranger, driven by the beauty and benefits they offer. However, it was the incredible people who work in parks that inspired me to take on a leadership role as Regional Chief. They are the best people you will ever meet, embodying a unique ethos that is unmatched anywhere else. I wanted to be a part of making their lives as fulfilling as possible, and I am dedicated to supporting and uplifting this amazing community."

For James, leadership is about supporting others. He finds his greatest satisfaction in helping employees grow, and guiding them as they create lasting experiences for visitors. "Helping employees grow is incredibly rewarding! As a leader, I carry the responsibility of ensuring their happiness. Seeing a smile on an employee's face as they help a park visitor create a lifelong memory, and knowing I played a small part in that, is truly amazing."

No two days are ever the same for James. "The only constant is that there is no normal," he says. One day he might be paddling along the coast or exploring new trails, while the next he’s in meetings discussing the future of the parks system. "Every day feels like the best day of my life," he says.

His role also comes with challenges. Hurricane Helene was one of the toughest experiences of his career, requiring long hours and difficult decisions. But even in the hardest moments, James witnessed the strength and resilience of his fellow park staff. "I saw park staff doing what they do best—helping each other. People came from other states to lend a hand, creating a powerful and inspiring moment."

James’ advice for those interested in a career with SC State Parks is simple: Do it!

“And when you do, take pictures and remember the stories,” he adds. "This is an amazing life."

For those already in the park system and looking to grow, he emphasizes passion, purpose, and kindness. "Find your why, put others first, and above all, infuse kindness into everything you do."

When asked what excites him most, James doesn’t hesitate—meeting new people. Every interaction, whether with a park visitor, a fellow ranger, or a community member, brings a fresh perspective. His enthusiasm for his work is undeniable. "Each day feels like the best day of my life."

Though he isn’t an Ultimate Outsider yet, James encourages visitors to seek out a ranger and ask about their favorite spots in the park. "You’ll discover so many cool gems and hidden treasures," he says.

For James Revis, working in South Carolina’s state parks isn’t just a job—it’s a purpose, a privilege, and an adventure that never gets old.
