DISCOVER CAROLINA:
Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site offers two Discover Carolina programs for 4th and 8th grades based on the South Carolina Department of Education social studies standards:
Brother vs. Brother - 4th grade
In this program students will learn about the important roles that the men and women of South Carolina, both Patriots and Loyalist, played during the Revolutionary War. Students will take on the role of a spy by learning to use a quill pen to draw a detailed map. Next the students will join the militia during a militia muster where they will learn to drill and learn the loading procedures of a musket using replica wooden muskets. The program will end with the Ranger giving a historic weapons demonstration of loading and firing a musket.
Program Length 4 hours total (1 hr. Ranger led hike; .5-hour lunch; 2.5-hours interactive program)
Loyalty, Rebellion, or Neutrality: Choosing Sides in the Revolutionary War Backcountry- 8th grade
In this program, students will learn about the choices of allegiance that the men and women of the South Carolina Backcountry faced during the Revolutionary War. We will discuss what the prime motivations were that pushed the people of the Backcountry toward one allegiance over the others and the students will use this knowledge as they take on the role of a person of the Backcountry trying to decide which side they should join. They will also learn about the consequences of those choices of loyalty through the history of the Battle of Musgrove Mill that pitted Loyalist and Patriot Americans against each other.
