Hinges and Heritage

At Oconee State Park

Forge History with Us This September at Oconee State Park

Experience history brought to life as the Phillip Simmons Artist Blacksmith Guild comes to Oconee State Park for a weekend of traditional blacksmithing.

Watch master blacksmiths heat steel, swing hammers, and forge authentic candle holders using centuries-old forge-welding techniques. These handcrafted pieces will become part of the ongoing preservation of our sister site, Oconee Station State Historic Site in Walhalla, honoring the craftsmanship and Appalachian Gilded Age architecture that define this historic landmark.

More than a blacksmithing demonstration, this is preservation in action. Feel the warmth of the forge, hear the rhythmic ring of hammer on anvil, and watch sparks fly as skilled artisans transform raw steel into functional works of art using methods passed down through generations.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness living history and experience the artistry, tradition, and dedication that help preserve South Carolina's historic treasures.
