Maintenance Supervisor Stephen Hamilton

Park Service Profiles

Nestled in the lush landscape of the South Carolina Upstate, Oconee State Park and Oconee Station State Historic Site hold a special place in the heart of Stephen Hamilton, the Maintenance Supervisor. For Stephen, maintaining these parks is more than just a job—it’s a calling.

Stephen grew up in West Union, SC, where he spent many days as a child playing and exploring the outdoors. He later joined a local Boy Scout troop, where he learned about hiking, camping, and the importance of community. "Many of the skills I gained through scouting helped me get where I am today," he says.

After graduating high school, Stephen attended Tri-County Technical College, where he graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Science. "I enjoyed the jobs I had before the Park Service," he says, "but somehow felt it wasn’t where I was meant to be. I began thinking about my love for the outdoors and how I would like to find a job that wouldn’t be the same tasks day after day and where I could in some way be serving our community."

Stephen’s journey with the Park Service began in March 2016 when he took on the role of Park Technician. "After being in the position for a few months, I knew it was a perfect fit for me. I enjoyed the hands-on work, the skills I was learning, the staff as well as park guests, and the overall atmosphere. I knew then, I had not found another job, but a career!" Over the years, Stephen has climbed the ranks, becoming a Trades Specialist and eventually a Maintenance Supervisor in 2020.

As Maintenance Supervisor, Stephen oversees a wide range of tasks, from plumbing and carpentry to hazardous tree removal and major renovations. His work on the 1930s-era Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) cabins and facilities presents unique challenges but also deep satisfaction.  "Working on a historical park with infrastructure built nearly a century ago keeps the job interesting," he shares.

"I love seeing the results of a completed task. Knowing that what we as a staff and agency are doing is making a difference, prolonging the life and history of South Carolina’s State Parks, and making our visitors experience more enjoyable. Generations of family’s have made joyful memories coming to our state parks and the feeling of knowing we are helping continue this tradition for generations to come is very satisfying to me."

Stephen’s commitment to the parks extends beyond his daily duties. He’s also actively involved in events and community activities at Oconee State Park. "Oconee’s square dances are fun for the whole family. My oldest daughter, Grace, makes sure I keep my feet moving and loves attending the square dances on Friday nights throughout the summer," he says. Stephen also mentions "Halloween is not taken lightly at Oconee. Each year, campers decorate and pass out candy to our trick-or-treaters. We also have hay rides and other fun activities."

Stephen’s dedication to the park and its visitors is matched by his passion for history and natural resources.

As Stephen and his family work towards becoming Ultimate Outsiders—a challenge that involves visiting each South Carolina State Park—he reflects on the joy his career brings him. "I would encourage others to pursue a career with South Carolina State Parks. It brings me great pleasure to continue protecting our natural and cultural resources for recreation opportunities for current and future generations to enjoy and make memories."

Thank you Stephen for all you do!
