Standing with South Carolina State park rangers on World Ranger Day

If you ask anyone the defining characteristic of a Park Ranger, they immediately think of the “Smoky Bear” or campaign hat. But on World Ranger Day, let’s take a minute to celebrate ALL the hats that Rangers wear!

Starting with this year’s theme “Rangers: Guardians of a Changing Planet”:

Park Rangers are citizen-scientists. Their daily presence in parks gives them a unique understanding of the land and wildlife they protect. Through observation and research, they contribute valuable knowledge that helps us better understand and manage our natural resources.

Park Rangers are teachers. Whatever you may want to know about a park—the history, the topography, the flora and the fauna—a Park Ranger is there to help you explore and learn more than you knew before you drove through the gate.

Park Rangers are first responders. When guests are lost, injured, stranded, or facing emergencies, Park Rangers are often the first on the scene. From search and rescue operations to medical emergencies, Rangers step forward when people need help most.

Park Rangers are stewards. Not only are Park Rangers working to ensure the safety of guests, they are there to ensure the safety of the resource. They want to make sure each guest safely enjoys their visit but also that the resource is protected so that others may enjoy future visits.

Park Rangers are community builders. They work with volunteers, local communities, schools, conservation partners, and visitors to create meaningful connections between people and parks.

Park Rangers are problem-solvers. No two days are alike. One moment they may be repairing a trail, the next assisting a family, responding to a storm, managing wildlife issues, or helping organize a special event. Rangers excel at adapting to whatever challenges the day brings.

Park Rangers are quintessential hosts. They invite you to the party, they prepare the place, they welcome you in, and they make sure you leave only after showing you a good time! There are 50 parks in South Carolina that Park Rangers make ready for guests each and every day.

Park Rangers are the “clean up crew.” They clean the restrooms, sweep the floors, wash the windows, pick up the trash, and dust off the cobwebs. With more than 3,500 facilities in South Carolina State Parks, you can imagine how important that “hat” is!

And perhaps most importantly, Park Rangers are public servants. World Ranger Day is an opportunity not only to celebrate the many roles Rangers fill each day, but also to honor those Rangers around the world who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to protecting our natural and cultural heritage. We are grateful for the dedication, professionalism, and passion of South Carolina's Park Rangers, whose work ensures that our parks remain places of discovery, recreation, and inspiration for generations to come.

So on World Ranger Day, July 31, whether you see a Park Ranger in a campaign hat, a ball cap, or no hat at all, thank them for all the “hats” they wear daily that allow you to enjoy some of the most special places in South Carolina!
