Breaking Chains, Building Rights: A Legal History of Black South Carolinians

At Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site

BOOK NOW

Join us at Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site this Black History Month to learn about the laws that shaped the lives of Black South Carolinians during the years before and after the Civil War. This program will explore how laws supported slavery, limited freedom, and controlled Black lives, as well as the moments when people fought back to change these unfair rules. We’ll talk about the Black Codes, laws that kept Black people from being fully free, and the ways Black communities stood up for their rights. This is a chance to remember the struggles, honor the courage, and celebrate the progress made toward justice and equality.
