Slate tablets served as reusable writing tablets used to take temporary records and accounting. The surface of a writing tablet is smoothed and polished, have finished edges, and generally the overall quality of stone is higher than that used for roofing tiles. Writing styli made of slate or chalk could be used to take notations that could be easily wiped clean. This slate tablet and stylus were recovered from a c.1670-1690s private town lot at Charles Towne. The tablet has a finished edge. The stylus has pointed tip and a hole pierced through the end, which could have been to hang it for safekeeping.
