Bat Ecology

At Hampton Plantation State Historic Site

Come see scientists at work! Watch as nets are set up to capture bats as they exit their roost in the historic kitchen building. Scientists will measure the captured bats and attach tracking devices to learn where the bats are going! Bat ecology, biology and the history of bats at Hampton Plantation will be discussed. You can join the scientific effort as participants but due to the delicate nature of the bats, your participation will be the “WATCH” only kind. No touching will be permitted. If possible, bats will be shown to the public before their release, however, there is no guarantee. What to bring: Headlamp or flashlight, water bottle, bug spray, dress for the weather, camp chair. Program is free but registration required. *All bat netting and handling will be lawfully conducted by State and Federally permitted biologists.
