MLK, Jr. Service Day

At Table Rock State Park

Please join us at Table Rock State Park on January 15, 2018 for the MLK National Day of Service. On this day we will be working in the area of the historic Hemlock Picnic Shelter. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed this shelter along with 7 individual picnic sites sometime during 1936 and 1937. Hemlock Shelter is one of the best examples of CCC stonework on the park. Over the years the individual picnic flats fell into disuse and were not maintained as usable facilities. These individual picnic sites are in a beautiful mountain cove away from the hustle and bustle of the main day use areas within the park. Since these picnic sites were part of the original park master plan, we wish to reestablish them for visitor use. We will be cleaning and clearing out old trails to the picnic sites as well as the original footprints of the sites. As part of the project we will be establishing timber frame picnic pads to delineate each of the picnic sites, installing grills and putting together new picnic tables. If you are interested in helping with this project please call the park office at 864-878-9813 to sign up. We will be meeting at the Hemlock picnic shelter parking lot beginning at 10:00 am on January 15, 2018. Please wear comfortable work shoes and clothes. Bring work gloves, water and a lunch. The park will provide the tools necessary for the project. If you cannot work the day of the project but would like to make a financial contribution to support the project please contact Michael Trotter at or 864-878-9813.
