Animal Encounters

Virtual Animal Encounters 3rd through 5th Grades

Discover the Animal Forest without leaving your classroom. Zoo staff will help students explore the concepts of habitat and animal adaptations as they virtually observe the shorebirds and otters in their enclosures.

Each program will consist of a 30 minute zoo staff experience with 10 minutes of follow up question time for teachers and students.

Teachers will be sent a PDF worksheet for their students prior to the program as well as a list of curriculum standards addressed through this experience. Reservations are available for Wednesdays at 10:30am and 11:30am and must be made in advance.

We will provide a Zoom meeting link when you schedule your program.

For more information or to reserve your virtual animal encounter, call the Animal Forest office at 843-573-8517.

Our Pig-Casso Program is now ZOOMing to your device!

While our in-person Pig-Casso Program is on-hold, we are excited to offer a Virtual Pig-Casso Program, where you can watch our resident Guinea Hog reveal her artistic side from the comfort of your own home! You'll learn how zookeepers train animals, and why it's an important practice in zoos. Depending on which package you choose, you will either receive a digital copy of Madame's masterpiece or the original, straight from the artist's snout!
$10.00 Digital Doodles - A ZOOM program + digital copy of Madame's artwork.
Program will include virtual interaction with a zookeeper, and Madame the Guinea Hog. You will also receive a digital copy of the painting Madame created during the ZOOM session sent via email.
$50.00 Hog-Wild - A ZOOM program + Madame's original artwork + a hog snout!
Program will include virtual interaction with a zookeeper, and Madame the Guinea Hog, as well as the original artwork Madame created during the ZOOM session. You will also receive a fun hog snout, so you can paint like a pig at home! After the program, you may pick up Madame's painting and the snout at the Visitor's Center, and while you're here, why not visit the famous artist, Madame, herself? If you are unable to pick up the painting, we will gladly mail it to you!

Pig-Casso Paint Program

At the Pig-Casso Painting Party, children watch as our resident guinea hog reveals her artistic side. You will learn how zookeepers train animals, and why training is an important practice in zoos. Put paint to canvas as you create your own personal piece of art. There is a catch… you will have to paint like Madame Mazell. Look mom, no hands! This is a snouts-only art class; when you paint like a pig you can really go hog-wild!

What to bring: camera, bug spray and water

Meeting place: At the "Pig-Casso Paint Program Meets Here" sign in the Animal Forest, just past the Bear Habitat

Price: $10.00 per participant plus park admission. No more than 5 participants per session.

Behind the Scenes - The "Otter" Side of the Fence Program

When you think of otters, what do you think?  Cute, cuddly critters, right? Come find out the truth for yourself, up close and personal. You are invited to see the "otter" side of the fence, or wall in this case, as we take you behind the scenes of the otter habitat. The otters are pretty amazing, and you'll get a rare opportunity to see the training that goes on behind the scenes to ensure their good health. Please allow at least 15 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the Animal Forest otter habitat.
