Travel Advisory

9/14/2017

TRAVEL ADVISORY 9/14/17
The following state parks are closed until further notice, due to effects of Hurricane Irma:

  • Edisto Beach State Park - Edisto Beach State Park has suffered major effects from Hurricane Irma. The oceanfront campground was flooded by storm surge on the marsh side, and saltwater infiltrated and severely damaged the electrical system. The Live Oak campground is littered with downed trees and limbs after Irma, and a tornado associated with it, damaged the area.   In order for us to clean up and make repairs to both campgrounds, they will be closed for the remainder of the 2017 calendar year. The day-use area (with beach access) and cabin area of Edisto Beach State Park will reopen on September 22. If you have camping reservations between now and the end of 2017, you will be contacted and a full refund issued. Any cabin reservations affected will also be refunded. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

  • Hunting Island State Park - Hunting Island State Park was greatly affected by Hurricane Irma earlier this week.  Most of the damage was caused by flooding from the storm surge and heavy rains.  Roads are impassable throughout the park.  Parking areas are flooded.  The campground electric system and utilities were infiltrated by saltwater, requiring replacement.

In order for us to make repairs, the park will be closed for the remainder of the 2017 calendar year.  The Nature Center will reopen this Friday, September 15, and serve as an information hub for the park.  If you have a reservation at Hunting Island between now and the end of 2017, you will be contacted and a full refund will be issued.  Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.
  • Keowee-Toxaway State Park - campground, cabin area and canoe launch are OPEN
All other parks are currently open for business, but please check with those parks in advance to see if trails are open for visitor use.  More information will be posted on our website as conditions change, and parks reopen.
In the meantime, up-to-date information on Hurricane Irma can be found at www.SCEMD.org and South Carolina traffic information at www.511sc.org.

As openings and changes occur, information will be posted there. We appreciate your concern and thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.
