The park is open!  These areas remain closed: 300 Section of the lodge and 300 section dock,Mt. Carmel and McCormick Rooms, Barracks, Convention Center, Skeet Field/Archery/Axe Throwing, All Trails, Swimming Pool.  All other areas are OPEN!



Hickory Knob State Park hours: Sunrise to Sunset. Please use the cell number posted at the park office for issues outside of operation hours. 

Check-in is at 4:00 p.m. and check-out time is at 10 a.m. for all lodge accommodations, campground excluded.

Front Desk/Gift Shop hours: 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., daily.

Boaters please note, outdoor plugs are located at the 200 section lodge rooms only and there is limited boat parking near the 400 section lodge rooms and cabins with no electric.

PETS

Pets are allowed in lodge rooms 307-312 at Hickory Knob. Pets are not allowed in any other lodge rooms. Pets are allowed in most other outdoor areas provided they are kept under physical restraint or on a leash not longer than six feet. Owners will be asked to remove noisy or dangerous pets or pets that threaten or harass wildlife.

Things To Do

  • Axe Throwing:  Axe throwing is available by appointment only (requires 24 hour notice), for ages 13 and up. $30 per person for 30 minutes, including instruction. We have 2 lanes, with the maximum of 2 people per lane. No outside equipment may be used. Please contact the park for more information or to schedule an appointment.
  • Fishing Information: Enjoy fishing in Strom Thurmond Lake for several species of bass, hybrid, crappie, perch and stripers.

    A valid South Carolina fishing license is required.

    A courtesy dock is provided for park guests.

  • Tackle Loaner Program: This park participates in the Tackle Loaner Program sponsored by the SC Dept. of Natural Resources. Rods and reels are available for loan at the park office.

  • Fishing: Yes
  • Freshwater Fishing: Yes
  • Boating and Boat Access: A boat ramp provides private boat access to Strom Thurmond Lake. An admission applies to the boat ramp area for day-use visitors, overnight guest may use the boat ramp at no charge. Boat docks are available for overnight guests on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Canoe/Kayak Rentals: Our boat rentals are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., daily, on a first come, first served basis. Canoes and kayaks rent for $15 for four hours, $20 per day. Paddleboards rent for $10/hour.

  • Boating: Yes

  • Park Store/Gift Shop: The gift shop offers a variety of souvenir items.

  • Restaurant: A buffet restaurant is located at the southern end of the Lodge building.

    It serves buffet style as well as menu orders and can seat up to 150 people in the main dining area.

  • Playground: One children's playground is provided in the lodge area. The park also has a basketball court, volleyball court, horsehoe pit, tether ball and ladder ball for park guests. There is also a putting green area near the restaurant. Equipment to use these facilities is available for check out at the front desk.

  • Swimming: Swimming is permitted in Lake Thurmond. Park visitors may swim at their own risk. Lake access for swimming is limited.

  • Swimming Pool: A pool is available for all overnight guests, including those staying in the lodge rooms, cabins or campground.

  • Archery: Archery is available by appointment only (requires 24 hour notice), for ages 7 and up. Maximum amount of people per group is 4 per appointment. $15 per person includes a 30 minute session with a ranger and equipment provided by the park. $10 per person includes a 30 minute session with a ranger, and you provide your own equipment. Please contact the park for more information or to schedule an appointment.
  • Skeet Shooting: Skeet shooting is available by appointment only (requires 24 hour notice) for ages 13 and up. Maximum number of people per group is five per appointment.
    $30 per round includes - 25 shots, park provides gun and ammo.
    $25 per round - 25 shots, visitor provides gun and ammo.

  • Hiking Trails: The challenging bike/hiking trail which is approximately 12 miles in length, travels through a pine forest, along the lake's edge providing opportunities for many scenic lake views. The trails consist of: Beaver Run Trail (2.5 miles), Lakeview Loop (7.2 miles) and Turkey Ridge Trail (1.7 miles)
