Millions of visitors travel to Huntington Beach, Hunting Island, Devils Fork, Edisto and Dreher Island state parks without noticing some of the hidden gems in the South Carolina State Park system such as Aiken State Natural Area.
Imagine observing just a hint of South Carolina’s mountains without ever visiting the Upstate. This beauty in rural Aiken County offers canoeing and fishing in the Edisto River, hiking trails and campground and trailside camping.
A little off the beaten path of the Piedmont area of South Carolina between Columbia, SC, and Charlotte, NC, is Chester State Park, centered on a 160-acre lake that is surrounded by a two-mile nature trail.
Each campsite has electrical and water hookups. Five of the sites are pull-through and others have the capacity for RVs up to 33 feet. Primitive camping areas at Chester are great for scouts.
If camping and fishing go hand-in-hand for you, then Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area is an ideal hook up. All but two of the spacious campsites are along the shores of Strom Thurmond Lake. Hamilton Branch occupies a peninsula on the 70,000-acre lake in McCormick County where hiking and bicycling can also be enjoyed.
Campers can find one of the best RV campgrounds in the park system at Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area. Three campgrounds are located along the shores of Lake Russell while two have individual electrical and water connections. Though tent camping is allowed on the campground, the park also has an area for walk-in tent camping with most of the sites being waterfront.
You can even plan a camping trip that includes your horses.
Five South Carolina state parks offer equestrian camping: Kings Mountain, Lee, Poinsett, Croft and H. Cooper Black. Equestrian camping areas are accessible to water and are located at or near the equestrian trail head.
