Physically challenging and mentally relaxing - there's no better way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life than to paddle your way into a peaceful state of mind on a scenic SC State Park river or lake. Guided trips are available. State Parks Director Phil Gaines reminds us that it's the "in-between" discoveries from the put-in to the take-out points that make for great photo ops and wonderful memories when paddling in SC State Parks. With a 23-year career in South Carolina State Parks, Rick Robertson is creating his own legacy as manager of the day-to-day operations and staff at Givhans Ferry State Park. They've been paddled with whales, pushed from planes and zipped around icebergs. Now you can win one of your own. Enter our 75th anniversary photo contest for a chance to win a kayak from the fleet of Charleston's own world-acclaimed Folbot, manufacturers of folding kayaks that have traveled with ease since 1933. Aiken State Natural Area is a popular destination for the family or a budding naturalist. The beautiful park in rural Aiken County offers canoeing in the South Edisto River, peaceful picnicking, fishing in the river and the park's spring-fed lakes, campground and trailside camping and hiking trails. The Edisto River, which flows through three state parks (Aiken, Colleton and Givhans Ferry) is known as the longest free-flowing blackwater river in the United States. The river flows for 206 miles through South Carolina. The term blackwater refers to the color of the river created by tannic acids from decaying leaves, branches and roots of hardwoods. |
In June - it's Riverfest at Colleton State Park. Held on the blackwater Edisto River near Walterboro, Saturday-Sunday, June 14-15, Riverfest features canoe trips from three to seven hours, canoe/kayak paddling workshops, live music, food and drinks. Register in advance and save. Bring the family to the shores of Lake Marion and enjoy special summer rates on a scenic Santee State Park cabin. South Carolina's official spider and the largest wolf spider in North America, the Carolina Wolf Spider hunts alone at night. Keen eyesight and speed enable this giant wolf spider to catch a meal without spinning a web. Here's what to do and what not to do to catch a glimpse of our featured creature. Hey kids, before you take to paddling the waters of your favorite South Carolina State Park, why not imagine your adventure and bring it to life with this cool coloring sheet? The Croft State Natural Area and the Palmetto Conservation Foundation have teamed up to create the Croft Passage of the Palmetto Trail in Upstate SC. A multi-use trail, the Croft Passage allows hikers, bikers and horseback riders access to scenic views of hardwood forests and the beautiful Fairforest and Kelsey Creeks.
