The Edisto River, which flows through three state parks (Aiken, Colleton and Givhans Ferry) is known as the longest free-flowing blackwater river in the United States. The river flows for 206 miles through South Carolina. The term blackwater refers to the color of the river created by tannic acids from decaying leaves, branches and roots of hardwoods.
